Great analogy--I couldn't agree more with you about the importance of moving forward. Yes, learning from the past is important, but there is a time and a place for that and looking ahead is what's really important. Thanks for the insight!

The worst part is that the clients themselves charge insane amounts of money for their own service yet don't see why we should charge for ours. It's very bizarre.

My red flag: Potential client: "How long is that going to take? I think it should only take an hour. Maybe 1 1/2 hours. Exactly how much can you get done in an hour anyway? I hope it's a lot."

YES! And, what's more, you will probably have to work 3-4 times harder to get the tough, negative customers to agree to the same simple requirements that the rest of your good customers willingly accept and expect as a benefit of doing business with you. There is something to be said for choosing to work with customers who are positive and proactive.

Couldn't agree with you more! I always think of it like a first impression. If someone spends their entire first call in a negative energy, they are probably going to be negative throughout the relationship. It should be exciting to start something new!

Great post Erin! I definitely agree and I think there's an immediacy and an honesty you get on the phone as you talk to potential customers that you don't always get via email. You get a better and truer sense of your prospective customers: what they like, what they don't like, and more importantly, what it might be like to work with them.
