Time: The Essence of a Well-Presented Teleseminar

Posted by on Dec 10, 2008 in Uncategorized | 4 comments

Time is an important component in any teleseminar presentation. There’s a lot to write about when it comes to this topic, so I’ll explore it now and also in future postings. As a teleseminar presenter, we need to be cognizant of time. We need to start on time and end on time. We need to plan our content carefully so that we can get everything completed in the time allotted. We need to cue certain things to play into our teleseminar whether it is bumper music or pre-recorded segments. Time is of the essence. We only have so much and we must use it wisely.

For now, I’ll just focus on one key area – starting your teleseminar on time. There’s nothing worse than showing up to a teleseminar a minute or two early and then watching the clock tick to the top of the hour and then three minutes or more past that … and still… the presenter has not started the presentation. He or she may be chatting casually, fussing with the recording, or worse still, not on the call yet! That happened to me the other day. The instructor of the class spent several minutes chatting about everything under the sun except the topic. When we did get started with the content, it was already 10 minutes past the hour. Disappointing to the least – and it was a paid class.

If you want people to respect you, it’s important to respect them first. And, you do that by respecting their time. Don’t waste people’s precious time. Always start your call at the top of the hour with an introduction and then move into your material.

If you want to chit chat before – do it before the start of the class. It’s also a good idea to let people know in your pre-teleseminar emails that you will start the class at the top of the hour and that they should arrive on the line at least 2 minutes early. Give them a link to http://www.time.gov so they can synch their watches and clocks.

In the future, we’ll explore other issues around time that will not only make your presentations more effective, but also position you as professional and polite in the eyes of your audience.
