No one is safe today. ;)   I kid cause I love but seriously, not loving the Getty acquirement of one of my favorite stock photo siteswww.sxc.hu.

Here’s why:

Yep.  That’s what I was met with when doing a search for RED WINE.  Nothing too difficult.

Go there… Try to do a search on anything now.  Not only do the images take forever to load, the thumbnails are now skewed and disproportionate and when you click certain thumbnails, it says, “This image has been deleted.”

Awesome.  Way to sell out to an overpowered company who ends up ruining what you’ve got.

This is the problem with companies building these awesome sites and selling out.  They ruin the foundation they’ve built.  Does Getty really care about the free site?  Of course not.  Check out all of the ads now for iStock Photo. Oh, they acquired them too. *snicker*

So, when you’re on your favorite site, you’re told to TRUST THE ORIGINAL… Uhhh… Go away?  This is my original…

Bah.  This is what’s wrong with huge institutions scooping up the little guys.

My only hope is that www.stockxpert.com doesn’t sell out to Getty…………… Pleasssssssssssse.

Just checked out www.sxc.hu and look:

What shall we bet that Getty never adds more images to this site.  Just moves them all over to their paid sites.

** Update: July 29, 2009 @ 4:57pm **

Getty and iStock Photo have both Tweeted me to say that they are aware of the server lag due to the media and press around the site and they are working on it.  I have my fingers crossed.

  • Today, the quick stats on sxc say:

    » 391055 photos online
    » 778 pending
    » 0 added today

Where did the 8.607 photos go?
  • Well, if sxc will not be the same you can always come to http://www.multimedia-stock.com ... it is a fine community
  • Site is starting to stabalise now. None of us are over the moon about what has happened and a few of our great contributers have left but we aint dead yet.
  • I haven't visited the site since the problems. I switched to Flickr (using photo credits of course) which I think builds better community anyhow.
  • Karlene Cameron
Yes, I agree with you, Erin. I don't like that Getty Images has scooped up my favourite image sites! They don't show a preview of the images when you hover over them. They can at least add that feature ...
  • Def tweet out if Uncorked responds. I'd like to hear what that might be.
  • Hi Lew! Sorry to hear that you are also experiencing issues. Let's hope they work it out quickly.

Brandon: I'm glad that you aren't having any issues but it seems like a lot of people are :( Lovin' the use of the lame sauce though. It's spicy lame sauce today!

Darren: No probs - I had received an email and thought uh oh... and well, uh oh it is. Hopefully they figure it out.
  • Didn't know about the aquisition, thanks for the info.

I keep getting timed out or a page loaded without the style sheet. I wonder if they may be having some issues with moving the site to a different server?
  • Yeah, I'm sadden now too! I can access the site, but only if I'm willing to wait FOREVER!!! I also didn't receive any of the error scripting you have pictured above! Let's only hope SXC.HU isn't completely tainted, and this is a short term issue!

    Getty Images + SXC.HU = LAME SAUCE
  • Erin,

I'm unable to reach sxc.hu as well (Georgia, US) - it's not just you.

    Lew
  • Hi Uncorked :)

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad to know it's working fine on your end. I noticed that you replied from the same IP location as GettyImages.com - do you work for them? If so, I'd love to know their official statement on what they are doing with that site just so that I, as a proud promoter of the service, can stand behind the website 100%.

Awesome sauce. :) Thanks for commenting!
  • Uncorked
The site is working fine here. Remember, Getty didn't buy SXC, Jupiter did. Getty just happened to buy Jupiter, who was by all accounts pretty much bankrupt.

I saw somewhere on iStock's site where they said the images would remain free for sure. Can't find it now.
  • Hey Brandon! Not against iStockphoto. I'm against Getty Images acquiring everything and turning everything into over-paid imagery. SXC is a free site and now, with Getty destroying the site (pretty much), it's useless. You can't find good, free stock photos in many places and now... well, I'm willing to bet that this awesome free site will fall prey to Getty's big working machine.
  • What's your deal against iStockphoto? You're feisty today! :-)
